2006-06-13 - An ABB Network Manager solution will improve grid reliability in one of Algeria’s three power distribution networks by pinpointing and isolating network faults – work that is currently done by service teams traveling in difficult mountainous terrain.

The solution is being installed on behalf of Sonelgaz, the Algerian state utility, and will significantly improve reliability and quality in one of Sonelgaz’s three power distribution networks – the area in and around Constantine, the country’s third largest city.

If a fault occurs, a service team has to search for its location in the field, a time-consuming process that can lead to lengthy power outages.

When the new ABB Network Manager system goes online in Spring 2007, it will resolve these challenges and give Sonelgaz real-time monitoring and control of the entire network. Operators will be able to pinpoint faults immediately, make the best use of network capacity and loading, and better manage service crews and work scheduling.

A further 533 substations and 355 overhead isolators will be equipped with REC523 control, protection and monitoring units.

Each substation and overhead isolator will transmit real-time data to the control centers via an ABB telecommunications system using WLL (Wireless Local Loop) and UHF radio technology.
