ABB to deliver powerful, energy-efficient propulsion and electrical systems for icebreakers

Zurich, Switzerland, June 30, 2011 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, won an order worth more than $40 million to provide complete energy-efficient power and propulsion systems for two new icebreaking vessels to be built by the Arctech Helsinki Shipyard in Finland. The order was booked during the first quarter of 2011.

Designed for extreme environmental conditions in the arctic sea, the vessels will operate in drifting ice of up to 1.7 meters thick and temperatures as low as minus 35 degrees Celsius. Both vessels are scheduled for delivery in the spring of 2013.

Shipping company Sovcomflot will use the vessels to transport supplies to the Sakhalin-1 platform that will be developing the Arkutun-Dagi field off Sakhalin Island in the Russian Far East.

The order comprises power generation and distribution systems, thruster motors, and two 6.5 megawatt propulsion systems including drives and the Azipod energy-efficient electric propulsion units.
