ABB wins $25-million order in South Africa

Zurich, Switzerland, Dec. 4, 2007 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won a $25-million order from Anglo Platinum for equipment and services to help more than double production at a processing plant in South Africa.

ABB will deliver two gearless mill drive systems to help run the ore-grinding equipment at Anglo Platinum’s mill in Mokopane, about 280 kilometers north-east of Johannesburg. Anglo Platinum is the largest primary producer of platinum, accounting for about 38 percent of the world’s production.

ABB’s gearless mill drive systems will significantly improve the plant's capacity, adding 600,000 tons of ore to the 385,000 tons processed each month now. The expansion will also increase the amount of refined platinum produced, from 200,000 to 430,000 ounces annually.
