Zurich, Switzerland, Nov. 21, 2007 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won a $45 million contract from Angola’s Empresa Nacional de Electricidade (ENE) to connect the electrical grids in the northern and central parts of the country.

ABB’s delivery will contribute to a reduction in CO2 and NOx emissions from fossil fuels by enabling more hydropower generated in the north to be fed into the central electrical grid. The availability of reliable, quality power will support economic development in the central region and create job opportunities.

“Reliable supplies of electricity are an essential ingredient of economic growth,” said Peter Leupp, head of ABB’s Power Systems division. “We are very pleased to work with ENE to connect people in Angola with a stable source of power that will help to improve the nation’s living conditions.”

The power system will comprise two substations, in Gabela and Quileva, and a series compensation system to be installed at Gabela. The system will be controlled and monitored with a MicroSCADA installation to help prevent disturbance, plan power consumption, and provide control over the power supply with real-time data from the substations.
