Siemens to control diesel power station in Pakistan

Erlangen, Oct 15, 2007 - The Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) is to equip the Sheikhupura diesel power station in Pakistan with automation and power supply systems. The contract, worth several million euros, was awarded by MAN Diesel SE, Augsburg/Germany. The diesel power station, designed to produce 225MW of electricity, is scheduled to go into operation in March 2009.

The power station is located in Sheikhupura near Lahore and is being built by MAN Diesel and the Pakistan Atlas Group in a strategic partnership which envisages the construction of four diesel power stations by 2012. The project is based on an initiative of the Pakistan government aimed at satisfying the country's rising energy demands. The Sheikhupura diesel power station will have eleven diesel-generator units, each with an output of 19MW, plus a 17MW steam turbine, and will feed up to 225MW of electrical energy into the power supply grid of northern Pakistan.

The Siemens scope of supply includes power equipment such as medium and high-voltage transformers as well as all the high, medium and low-voltage distribution systems. Automation of the power station will be carried out with the help of the Siemens Diesel Control Concept (Sidicon) based on a Simatic S7. Besides being responsible for the integration and installation of all the delivered components, Siemens will also carry out commissioning.

Among the main reasons why Siemens was awarded the contract were the company's many years of experience in the integration of automation and power supply equipment for comparable applications and the local competence of Siemens Pakistan Engineering Co. Ltd. in Karachi, which is responsible for implementing the project locally.
