Siemens supplies drives and automation for rolling mill in China

May 18, 2007 - The Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services (I&S) Group has landed orders from Baoshan Iron & Steel Group Co. Ltd. (Baosteel) in Shanghai to supply drive and automation equipment for the modernization of the Hot Strip Rolling Mill No. 1 and expansion of the plate mill. The principal focus of both projects is to equip the production facilities with powerful and reliable drives that will increase the productivity and availability of the rolling mills. Commissioning of these modernized plants is scheduled for November 2007 and December 2008 respectively.

With an annual output of 23 million metric tons, Baosteel is China's largest steel producer and the sixth largest producer worldwide. For 15 years now, the Hot Rolling Mill No. 1 has formed the backbone of the production facilities in Shanghai. The plate mill, already equipped with electrical and automation equipment from Siemens, has been in operation since 2005. This facility produces high-grade steel destined for applications in the oil and gas industry and in shipbuilding.

寶鋼年產量為2300萬噸，是中國最大、全球第六大的鋼鐵生產商。15年來，1號熱軋鋼廠已經成為上海生產車間的支柱。已經裝備了西門子的電氣和自動化設備的軋板機廠從2005年開始投入使用，該廠生產指定用于油氣工業和造船應用的高級鋼材。

The electrical equipment of the hot-rolling mill was replaced in stages since 1998 with the aim of increasing plant availability and improving product quality. As part of the current project, Siemens is resupplying the drives for the roughing mill and sections of the finishing mill.

熱軋鋼廠的電氣設備從1998年起就開始逐步更換，目的是提升工廠的可用性和改善產品質量。作為當前項目的一部分，西門子再次為粗扎機和精軋機提供驅動。

The plate mill will be equipped with an additional roughing stand which will increase the capacity of the plant to 1.8 million metric tons per year. Siemens is supplying a twin main drive with cylindrical-rotor synchronous motors, which, at 40 revolutions per minute, will produce a rated output of 8000 kilowatts and is designed for an overload of up to 275 percent. A cycloconverter will be used to regulate the electrical supply to the equipment. The new roughing mill rolling stand will be integrated into the automation environment of the heavy-plate rolling mill which has already been implemented according to the Siroll PM concept.

In both projects Siemens will be responsible for overseeing installation and commissioning.
