Zurich, Switzerland, July 14, 2006 - ABB, the global power and automation technology group, has announced the sale of its 5,000th robot into the United Kingdom market. The IRB 340 FlexPicker robot is one of three units that will support an advanced package handling solution for Allied Bakeries, which operates a dozen production sites across the U.K.

The new packaging line was designed and integrated by solutions provider RTS Flexible Systems. To mark the milestone, ABB Robotics U.K vice president Martin Walder recently presented a commemorative plaque to RTS managing director, David Bradford.

Building upon a long tradition of leadership in automotive applications, we are helping customers in foods, foundry, plastics, electronics and other markets to achieve new levels of productivity and flexibility not available through traditional automation technologies.”

ABB sold its first robot into the United Kingdom in 1974 and estimates some 14,000 units from all suppliers are in use there today. In cooperation with systems integrators and other partners, the group has provided advanced six-axis robots to a growing range of markets. Worldwide, ABB has the largest installed base of robots, totalling more than 140,000.
