Australia’s power utilities are revamping their power distribution networks and placing an estimated three out of every four orders for secondary distribution switchgear with ABB.

In the past few years demand for ABB secondary distribution switchgear in Australia has grown almost tenfold, with most of the country’s leading utilities choosing to place 1-5 year contracts for medium-voltage products with ABB.

“It’s a combination of two factors,” says Denis Jackson, national manager for ABB’s medium-voltage secondary switchgear business. “Utilities want to improve reliability and reduce the operating costs of their distribution equipment, and ABB has a portfolio of secondary switchgear with exceptional performance characteristics and low life-cycle costs.”

The range of products covered by the contracts includes 11 kV ring main units, 11/22 kV distribution feeders, 11/22 kV air break switches, and 11/22/33 kV outdoor circuit breakers.

In particular, it is ABB’s SafeLink and SafeRing ring main units and SafePlus compact gas-insulated switchgear – all of which are available in most markets worldwide – that are consistently selected for new installations and to replace competitors’ products in packaged substation retrofits.

“These are very compact, robust and cost-efficient units,” says Jackson. “They’re fully sealed in a stainless steel tank, factory tested for speedy installation, virtually maintenance-free and very safe.”

Among the utilities that have selected the equipment are many of Australia’s largest power providers like Ergon Energy, Energex, Integral Energy, Actew, Etsa, Powercor, County Energy and T Squared.
